GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Position is responsible for supplementing and supporting NHREC math curriculum and instructional initiatives by working alongside teachers. Particular attention will be given to the math curriculum including the integration of problem solving, and critical thinking. The math specialist is responsible for designing meaningful and individualized academic lessons, small group activities, and a positive classroom environment that promotes individualized education.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Assists in developing, implementing and assessing NHREC’s math curriculum as aligned with the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning.
  • Assists with the selection of instructional materials and equipment, and with the implementation of innovative practices in math.  
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, sharing expert content and instructional knowledge and resources while demonstrating creativity, flexibility, and responsiveness.
  • Assist with planning, developing and implementing an effective structure for elementary grade level teacher.
  • Assist with monitoring student assessment/test results and provides assistance to improve student performance.
  • Provides individual and/or small group instruction as needed to meet the needs of students.
  • Interprets the abilities and disabilities of students and works cooperatively with classroom teachers.
  • Assists with screening, evaluating, and recommending interventions for students.  
  • Writes IEP goals and objectives and attends IEP meetings as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Complete at least three years of successful, full-time teaching experience in a public or accredited nonpublic school.  Must hold a valid or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with a Mathematics-algebra I (add-on) or mathematics (secondary) teaching endorsement (6-12). Must have completed at least three years of successful teaching experience with students who have emotional/learning disabilities. Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices in math, curriculum development, and adult learning theory. Must possess excellent organization and communication skills.
