General Statement of Duties

The New Horizons Governor's School for Science and Technology is seeking highly motivated and experienced instructors to teach college-level Chemistry at our state gifted STEM high school. The successful candidates will be responsible for creating and delivering lesson plans, lab activities, and projects that cater to the diverse learning needs of our high-achieving students. The Governor's School offers a challenging and stimulating curriculum that is specifically designed to prepare high ability students for college and future careers within the STEM fields. Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement a curriculum for the advanced chemistry lab course.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments and ensure a safe and effective learning environment
  • Assess and evaluate student progress and provide feedback to students and parents
  • Provides individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
  • Evaluates the academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions and field trips.
  • Evaluates each student’s growth in knowledge and skills in the course of being taught.
  • Participate in school-wide events and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to develop interdisciplinary projects and activities. 
  • Communicates with parents in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Administers testing in accordance with Governor’s School for Science and Technology testing practices.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Director or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum education, training, and experience requirements

Master’s degree in chemistry area and two years of secondary or post-secondary teaching experience preferred. Within three years, teachers must meet the Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements to teach, and be eligible for, or in possession of an appropriate Virginia teaching license.  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.  Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
