STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The position is responsible for creating a classroom environment to develop competencies in advanced college math (precalculus, calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations) skills and an understanding of the structure of mathematics, and to motivate each pupil to apply their mathematical understanding and skills in the solution of practical problems.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Teach content and skills in mathematics utilizing the curriculum designated by the Governor’s School of Science and Technology and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the Governor's School of Science and Technology’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards.
  • Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student and the needs of identified subgroups of students.
  • Evaluate the academic and social growth of students, prepare grade reports, and keep appropriate attendance records, including attendance reports, checklists, and other record-keeping activities as necessary.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive, and safe classroom environment.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervise students in assigned out-of-class activities during the working day.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Administer testing in accordance with Governor’s School of Science and Technology testing practices.
  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in mathematics or a related field with an additional 18 graduate credits in math is required;a doctorate is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience.
  • Must be eligible for, or in possession of a Virginia teaching license in Mathematics.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Must possess solid leadership qualities and the personal characteristics necessary to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and other community groups.
