GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

 The position is responsible for teaching and monitoring the delivery/effectiveness of the Patient Care Technician curriculum to 12th-grade students.  This position offers a unique opportunity for an individual with a background in the healthcare industry to impart knowledge and skills to career and technical students interested in pursuing a career in patient care.  The Patient Care Technician Instructor will function within the policies and practices of the New Horizons Regional Education Centers and the cooperating work-based learning agencies. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and update course/program curriculum materials to ensure alignment with industry standards and educational objectives.
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students in accordance with the course of study adopted by New Horizons Regional Education Center.
  • Teaches Patient Care Technician skills and workplace readiness skills. The instructor is required to provide students the opportunity to participate in the HOSA student organization.
  • Plans instructional program; demonstrates skills, assigns, and evaluates coursework. Administers methods to evaluate progress. Records progress and issues reports to students, parents, and administrators. 
  • Adapt to different teaching styles to accommodate the population and teaching modes such as face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid.
  • Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and understandings and prepares regular progress reports.
  • Conferences regularly with parents/guardians regarding behavior observations and the performance of students.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, electronics equipment, and instructional aids.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior and creates a safe, orderly, and effective environment for learning during class time.
  • Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards and personal integrity in all interactions.
  • Complies with and supports NHREC and NNPS regulations and policies.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the principal, program administrator, or other appropriate administrator.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must be licensed or certified in the specific trade or subject area.
  • Maintains licensure/certification at the state and/or national level, assumes responsibility for professional development, and maintains memberships in appropriate professional associations.
  • Working knowledge of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of instruction, learning theory, and teaching methodologies.
  • Ability to prepare students for state licensing/credentialing examinations
  • Skill in the use of technology related to occupation and instruction
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and teamwork environment
  • Ability to manage and operate a technical laboratory

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Eligible for Virginia teaching license
  • Must hold a current, unrestricted Virginia license or a multistate licensure privilege as a Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Bachelor degree plus completion of Nursing program - with interest in further education
  • Three years of verifiable experience as a registered nurse within the previous five years
  • Maintain professional certification according to Virginia Recertification Regulations.
  • Must obtain the AHA BLS Instructor Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain the Certified EKG Technician (CET), Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT-A), and Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certifications within the first year of employment.
