GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Position is responsible for instructing secondary school students in the field of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) and creating a safe and orderly learning environment. Position motivates students to develop an interest in and an appreciation of the HVAC-R field. Position develops knowledge, skills, and talents of students, utilizing a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to students’ interests and abilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Instructs 11th and 12th grade students in all phases of HVAC-R in accordance with the course of study adopted by New Horizons Regional Education Centers.

 

Enables students to develop an appreciation of the fields of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration and their practical applications.

 

Demonstrates techniques to students in heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration concepts.

 

Instructs students in the proper care and use of heating/air-conditioning/refrigeration tools and equipment.

 

Makes minor repairs and adjustments to heating/air-conditioning/refrigeration equipment and requests assistance for major repairs as appropriate.

 

Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field of heating/air-conditioning/refrigeration instruction.

 

Maintains books, instructional materials, heating/air-conditioning/refrigeration equipment, and instructional aids.

 

Develops clear and concise instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of academic instruction, hands-on application and computer based learning.

 

Provides individual and small group instruction and adapts the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities, using a variety of instructional techniques appropriate for the ages and skill level of students.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a high school diploma and possess a minimum of three to five years of verifiable experience in the HVAC-R trade. An Associate’s Degree (AAS) in Technical Studies with a specialization in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology or the equivalent is preferred.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Must possess a Universal EPA certification and Master or Journeyman HVAC license to qualify for a Virginia Teaching Certificate to teach HVAC-R courses.
