GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Provides medical, health, and wellness services to NHREC students, support staff, and faculty. Administers medication, provides illness detection and first-aid services, and related services as required. Oversee clinics to include: Medication Management, Recordkeeping, and organizing student files in relation to health issues and disease processes. Educate Teachers and Family members on Health and Safety within the Special Education population. Maintain all shot, asthma, seizure, and allergy plans, and make sure that the medications required are available for students. Ensure clinic has all needed nursing and sanitation supplies, and all records are ready at any time should an inspection occur.   

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS

Provides emergency medical care for students, staff, and faculty, assessing the extent of injury and/or illness and recommending additional treatment/referral and as administering medication as prescribed by physician and/or permitted by parent/guardian.

 

Coordinates procedures for sending an ill/injured student home or to medical treatment facilities.

 

Screens vision, hearing, dental, including referrals and follow-up.

 

Serves as a health resource person to school staff, parents and community.

 

Performs Wellness counseling through publications, presentations, and visits to classrooms.

 

Communicates with students, staff, faculty, other medical resource persons, and parents/guardians to share information and to determine appropriate actions.

 

Utilizes equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment, general office equipment for recording diagnosis and treatment, and presentation materials.

 

Responds to special “codes” incidents- injury, medical emergencies; assists in de-escalating crisis situations.

 

Assesses students who appear to be potential suicide risk; intervenes by notifying appropriate staff member, administrator, psychologist etc.

 

Administers all treatments prescribed by the student’s personal physician within the guidelines of the Virginia Nurse Practice Act. (Such as tube feeding, suctioning, and care of colostomy).

 

Maintains proper documentation of logs, health records and immunization on all students within the assigned school, and prepares/submits state reports as required.

 

May assist with information gathering in situations of suspected child-abuse and substance abuse; communicates findings to appropriate staff or outside agency according to prescribed procedures.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of emergency and routine nursing care for school age children and young adults as well as adult staff and faculty. Ability to perform first aid, CPR, or other emergency treatment. Ability to use medical equipment for diagnosis/treatment and general office equipment for recording information.

 

Thorough knowledge of vision/hearing/ dental screening and referral procedures, and thorough knowledge of medical and social service resources available in the community.

 

Ability to prepare and present health and Wellness information, with Good organizational, human relations and communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited nursing program which qualifies the person for completing the registered nurse licensing exam or LPN program (bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred) and some nursing experience working with health related issues inherent in school age students with Autism, Intellectual, and Emotional Disabilities;  or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • RN/LPN Nurse license.
  • Certification in cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and hearing/vision screening.
  • Certified in applied suicide intervention skills and training-desirable
  • Certified Handle With Care – Crisis Intervention
