We are seeking an experienced HVAC Mechanic/Maintenance Specialist to join our campus facilities maintenance team. This position is responsible for skilled work involving the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and installation of commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout NHREC facilities.

 

General Responsibilities


• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC systems including rooftop units, air handling units, package systems, split systems, compressors, and Trane equipment.


• Service refrigerant systems and refrigerant controls, including adding Freon/refrigerant as needed.


• Perform electrical troubleshooting using blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.


• Maintain and repair boiler room equipment, pumps, motors, controls, and related mechanical systems.


• Install new HVAC equipment and follow OEM maintenance schedules.


• Perform preventive maintenance and maintain accurate service records/logs.


• Assist with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general maintenance duties as needed.


• Respond to emergency maintenance calls and campus service requests.


• Maintain and service maintenance vehicles, equipment, and tools.


• Remove snow from walkways, parking lots, and roadways when required.


• Lead or assist less experienced maintenance personnel when assigned.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience


• Minimum four (4) years of commercial HVAC experience required.


• Journeyman HVAC or Electrical License preferred.

 

• Strong electrical troubleshooting experience required.


• Experience with rooftop units, Trane systems, compressors, and boiler rooms required.


• EPA Certification required.


• Knowledge of refrigeration systems, heat exchange, air circulation, and HVAC controls.


• Experience in plumbing and multiple building trades preferred.


• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and plans.


• Valid Virginia Driver’s License required; CDL preferred.


• CPR certification preferred.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


• Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and safety regulations.


• Understanding of national, state, and local building and electrical codes.


• Ability to operate tools, equipment, and maintenance vehicles safely.


• Strong communication and teamwork skills.


• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

 

Physical Requirements


• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.


• Ability to climb ladders, work on rooftops, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions.


• Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, pushing, pulling, and reaching required.

 


Work Environment


• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in campus facilities.


• Exposure to electrical systems, chemicals, flammable materials, noise, extreme temperatures, and mechanical equipment is expected.
