PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under direct or general supervision, provides assistance to a special education classroom teacher, performing a variety of tasks relating to the instructional, behavioral, social-emotional, and/or physical needs of students with disabilities in a special education, public separate day school setting; works with individual students and small groups to help students adapt to the school environment and to achieve the goals and objectives in their individualized education plan (IEP), and to continue to work toward the goal of returning to a less restrictive educational setting and/or preparing for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. The assistant provides assistance and supervision for students in a public separate day school program designed to support students with an autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and/or emotional disabilities.  

Support and implement the strategies and initiatives (where applicable) outlined in our Organizational Strategic Plan, Boldly Go 2025.  Models the NHREC Strategic Plan values: Equity, Engagement, Experience, Collaboration, Career Readiness, and Empowerment.  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of high school (2 years of college preferred) and experience working with children or young adults with Autism or Emotional Disabilities; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability. Virginia Autism paraprofessional certificate preferred. Valid Virginia Driver's License
